Karolina Wojtas takes bizarre photos found online that once obsessed her and recreates them one-to-one, turning anonymous internet images into staged homages.
To “steal” them, she meticulously reconstructs the scenes: hunting for similar places, dressing models in the same clothes, and restaging the entire situation as faithfully as possible. Some of these recreated images have even returned to the corners of the internet where she first discovered them, at times outshining the originals. A notorious example is a communion photo that resurfaces every year, sparking the same flood of comments: “what kind of parents are these, what kind of family, how much money did the kid get?” The project both celebrates the pictures that shaped her imagination and highlights how images circulate online, detached from context yet endlessly reinterpreted.
